MAKING LEARNING CONNECTIONS THROUGH EXPLORATORY PLAY

Following exploration of the seeds and compost the children listen to a story about plant growth (A Seed in Need). The teacher revisits the story to remind the children about the conditions plants need to grow. Through the use of questions and discussion the children’s ideas can be explored and the teacher can assess what the children already know. One of the children refers to the fact that plants need "exercise". The teacher is aware of the connections the child is making in this session and his previous learning in an earlier session about living and non-living things. The teacher supports his connection to make him feel secure and values his contribution to the discussion.
