Developing a purchasing policy

Developing a purchasing policy in science helps both the science leader and the headteacher. The policy is really a set of guiding principles and is based on the idea that the science leader should be able to:

  • produce an organised purchase list with relevant information e.g. catalogue name, item, code, quantity and total;
  • indicate why items are being purchased;
  • suggest priorities;
  • indicate 'shared spending;' with other subjects such as ICT, numeracy.

When creating a purchasing list which has to be 'signed off' by a senior member of staff, it is useful to consider using the following headings for organising purchases. This approach helps the science leader to indicate why items need to be purchased. Click here to view Purchase audit sheet.
