Helping hands
There lots of different ways that people can help you maintain your science resources, here are some example.
- Give staff resource catalogues and 'Post It's' and ask them to identify which resources they want you to purchase when you do a major audit and resource purchase each year.
- Give each class a letter with a list of consumables or special science resources from home (e.g. fabrics for a materials or insulation topic) and ask that class to collect those items for you. Click here for letter template.
- Keep a 'RUNNING LOW' list by the resource storage, that anyone can add to, so that you and your resource monitors won't have to keep going through resources to find out which items need replenishing.
- Write to local industries, retailers and other businesses to find out if they are able to contribute to your science resources, for example: Garden Centre - plant pots, seeds, compost. Supermarket - items in different kinds of packaging for a recycling topic, or different fruits and vegetables for a healthy eating topic.
- If the school governing body has allocated someone with responsibility for science see if they can help with developing and collecting science resources.
- Towards the end of a half term ask staff to complete a special science resources sheet so that you know what they might need for their topics in the following term.
- What level of responsibility should children have for science resources?
- What level of responsibility should staff have for science resources?
- How do I set expectations in a school?
- What strategies can be used to develop children's independence in choosing and using science resources?
- How will I know who has borrowed which resources and what is lost or broken?

Go on and get some Space Phones, and listen to the eerie space sounds that they make. You can also use them to demonstrate sound waves and echoes.
